THE WRITER'S DESK

It was late evening and the crimson sun on its departing mood. On the westen side of the single -story ,two room buiding the wooden window as open wide lettting in the cooing breeze mingled with dusty gow from out side.
The room was yet empty with a small writing table with some loose papers lying olose and some manuscript sheets pinned up. Now and then the chirping of a few birds somewhere, were conuing the hours, and the table -light was on and the only sign that the writer might be in any time. The chair was anxiously waiting , the window was inviting breeze ; even mango tree beside te window was eagery counting the seconds and and the pen ying idle was waiting,
This was, now, the time when each day the writer would come , write down his short story and read it loud for his his own pleasure dreaming of the effect on would be readers in time. Even the window side breeze , the outside branches with leaves and the inside space would seem eager and happy istening to the writers's voice telling those stories ! ...
But to day the writer seemed to have forgotten his time and was so late when darkness were spreading out fast.
Then without any past exprience , the window heard he first sound - " Hari bole - Hari bole' , in repeatation and looked askance to the flowing air and then beyond. But none coud tell them the meaning of the word which could not be the part of the story they were hearing daily and so long ! ..
And the writer did not come ...!

BLESSLINGS NEVER FAIL !

The Two brothers ,from a very poor famiy went to the temple and prayed . The elder one prayed -' God give me only two lakhs of Rs and I shall make my own future without ,even, asking for further support". God came out of the idol and told ---O.K ! when you are 20 yrs or more, buy a lottery ticket and you get it. The other brother ,two years junior, was sitting mum and God asked - "and your prayer "?
He told - I don't know how to pray or what to pray but my mother told me to ask for your love and to look after me, when I need" . God ,before getting back in the idol, said -'O.K and done" ... and vanished,- - - - - - - - - -- - - -----
After a few years , the elder boy Rabom was a young youth , bought a lottery Ticket and got two lakhs and as an egoistic adult tried evry trade , gambling and even then became a milionaire but died with a spoilt liver after heavy drinking and smoking . By inheritence ( he had no time to marry) his wealth shifted to his younger brother Rakhal who was 28 now.
In heaven, Robin strated blaming God for his tragic fate and mis fortune . God smiled and told - ' but you told you could look after yoursef after you got thar two lakh rupees "? Robin was more agitated and bamed the Lord -" But why my brother is now enjoying my fortune there "? God replied -" he wanted me to look after him without trying to be smart and law of Nature and inheritence took its effect without even my knowing ". Robin was still planning h, -ow to blame god for his misfortune !

SUN RISE ON THE JACKO HILL

( Short Story)

It was on the backgound of Global frame.. Suresh came for a summer trip to Simla from Chicago, U.S.A and Samir from New Dehi, India . They both had a very surprise re-union of old friendship at the mall in the maorning. They both were class-mates at school and undergraduate collge level in st. xavirers, calcutta in 1970s, Suresh now a vice -President of MBNA Bank while Samir is a lecturer in a Delhi College. The meeting was so unexpected and exciting on the back ground of Simla Scenario! They talked and talked for over an hour in a restauranr and then decided to climb the Jacko hill to enjoy the SUN-Rise at the top. , each one in his own way but meet at the park at the foot of the hill and spend the good time there to talk and talk until Lunch together. And soon they parted and went back to each one's hotlel. In the school and Colege life Samir had more edge over Suresh in both academics and sport. Though suresh was more competative and ambitious while Samir was a ever an easy going boy with sharp intelligence. This induced a sort of jelousy or envy in suresh and finaly by being a Green -card holder of U.S.A he felt as better off. Any way, next day, they both reached the hill one hour before Sun-rise and started climbing without meeting each other. This time the dormant jeousy crept in Suresh and decided to beat Samir in the 'climb' and wanted to reach the top earlier than Samir who after cimbing for about half an hour found the Sun rising ike a lord in gold and red! Samir was so much charmed by the sight that he forgot about cimbing to the top, selected a flat stone on wayside and got lost in the beauty of Nature's bloom. On the other side , suresh was still cimbing and even sweating with the zeal of being the first this time in cimbing up to the top and ahead of Samir. And he reached really at the top , panting and perspiring though. By that time the Sun was already high up and glaring. Suresh did not care or bother but looked for Samir , could not find him and was very happy to experience the joy of leaving Samir behiind or below.
Samir on his own track after enjoying the Sun-rise in full, climbed back like a happy intoxicated enjoyer, came to the park , slanted himself on a bench and was still trying to swim and splash on his new expeience . After almost another half an hour Suresh came down exhausted and perspiring but like a winner , sat on the bench by Samir's side and asked - 'what happened with you ? -did not come to the top '?
Samir replied in soft pleasure -no , - I found the Sun rising on my half-way -climb ; stopped there and enjoyed the full Sun -rise ! and you ?' This time Suresh turned to samir like a 'topper' and told - ' I was on the Top and no time for that Sun-rise '..... There was a short gap or silence and then Samir asked in a cool voice - but Suresh , do you remember why we came to this hill this morning for ?' Suresh looked sideways nd asked back - ' Why?' Samir smied and replied - "Sun- Rise ! " Suresh remained still to absorb the full impact of Samir's reply and sat like a friend again defeated.:

OLD FASHIONED

Rama felt all blessed after being married to Ramesh but Ramesh had not the same span of feeling getting rama as his wife. She was beautifu and good in heart and manners but was not that smart and fluent in communication in parties and socials as his friends' wives were . This situation brough enought tense feeling in him and often became vocal, in rudeness. To this, once Rama responded - 'You know we are not struggling midde class and I am a house-wife. If I neglect this side of our strugging life and be a modern aocial friend and be like your smart girl -friend , who wil look after the house. Ramesh had a sharp response that day - ' You are very old fashioned'.
Rama went inside and wept and took an oath she will fulfil her husband's desire -some how. Two years passed by that time and they had a sweet child and Ramesh was also, now, trapped in the family life . Rama was by the time,a member of loca Ladies club and busy in every cultural show or gathering and won lot of praise in acting , organising and her name was now - the 'Smart Didi'. And ramesh had to spend more time managing most of house keeping. ....... days and months rolled by and then, one day with the baby on his lap he faced Rama and demanded - ' so ! most of the evening you are rare in the house . Don't you feel any resposibiity ?'..... Rama , while dressing up for the ladies' club -meeting lifted up her face to Ramesh , looked straight and let out --' you are very old fashioned . ( written -1970s).

BENEFIT OF DOUBT

In my student days a professor of science was invited to University Institute of calcutta to give a 'Lecture on - 'Non Existence of God' . He was known to be an Atheist. and gave a fiery lecture on 'Absirdity of Bind faith' and mocked all believers with sharp rhetorics. We were all so impressed by his oratory and clapped every time the cresendo was on the top.
After the lecture he was being taken in a car to be taken somewhere in Shambazar area and I was given the duty, as a volunteer , to see him off un to his place. He was being accompanied by one of his professr -friend .While on Cornwalis street and near the 'Than-thania Kalibari ', he suddeny turned his head to left, ( I noticed ) and he put his index finger to his nose to signify a 'pranam' to the deity of mother Kali'. To this his fried beside him laughed and teased him -" you gave such a good lecture on non-existence of God and now you Salute at Mother Kali ?- strange!". To this ,the invited professor replied -' where is the loss !. If god is not there , he won't see what I am doing and if Godess is there, she will excuse me , when I am wrong.
I could not then understand much of it but coud not , forget the event too.
